Reading at Home

Reading to your child can have lots of benefits like building vocabulary, sharing quality time together and setting a bedtime routine.

Before your child even starts to learn to read, you can help them by reading stories to them. Our school expects you to hear your child read at least 3 times a week and log it in their reading journal.

Your child will bring home a book from our school library that you can read to them. Joining the local library is free too. Once your child has finished RWI (Read,Write Inc) they are expected to choose books that they can read for themselves, but it can be nice to keep story time going even when they can read independently!

If you are not confident reading to your child, please speak to a member of staff who may be able to sign post you to further support or you could try using our lovely audiobooks.

Once your child has learnt some sounds, they will start to bring home a ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ book or ditty to practise reading with you. Here is  a great video about hearing your child read.

Summer Reading

Help your child avoid the summer slump! Try some of these opportunities:

Practise Sounds

Use the sheet in the pack, your little speed sounds booklet or the videos lessons below. Children now leaving reception should know all their set 1 sounds and be learning set 2. Children leaving year 1 should know all their sounds, set 1,2 and 3.

For reception parents or those new to our school, there is guidance and support on the RWI parent pages. This includes printable practice sheets for all the letter sounds to use at home.

Volunteer with Bookmark

Historically, children at Yorkmead have benefited from some additional adult supported reading time through the charity Bookmark. You too could become a Bookmark reading volunteer and change a child’s story.

Help a child learn to read so that they can succeed, in school and beyond. Bookmark Reading Charity are dedicated to igniting the joy of reading in children.

You could help ignite the joy of reading in a child. You’ll spend two thirty-minute sessions a week reading stories and playing games with a child aged between 5 and 10 years old, on Bookmark’s secure online platform. The programme involves two 30-minute sessions a week with the same child, for six weeks.

The best part? Our online volunteering can fit around your schedule seamlessly and there’s no need to leave your home.

You’ll get to see your young readers progress, knowing that you are opening a world of opportunity for their future.
